Pachamama is a goddess revered by the indigenous people of the Andes since time immemorial. She is also known as the earth/time mother. A healthy environment is a basic right of all the Earth's inhabitants. It took just a little time to reaffirm this Right by the Rio declaration (UN 1992).
Environmental justice advocates have shown that this is no accident, but a statistical fact: Poor communities are routinely targeted to host facilities that have negative environmental impacts - say, a landfill, dirty industrial plant or truck depot. The statistics provide clear evidence of what the movement rightly calls "environmental racism."
From South Bronx to Soweto, from Penang to El Paso, communities all over the world are finding commonality in their experiences and goals in seeking environmental justice to address climate change, acid rain, drought, floats, mega storms and hurricanes. These effects on their lives and livelihood point in the same direction: environmental health is a global issue that concerns all nations of the world.
A Peña is a gathering of musicians, artists, and friends who come to share their work and to play together. Peñas take historical root from Chilean social gatherings during the 60s and early 70s that expressed the spirit of creativity and resistance in melody, poems, and artwork. Please feel free to bring your own stories, songs, poems, or artwork to share.
