Which Road for the 21st Century?

Wednesday, November 4, 2015, 7:00 p.m. From 2010 to the present, austerity measures by the Troika and Greek governments resulted in a humanitarian crisis with serious consequences for the Greek people. Hundreds of strikes and struggles contributed significantly to the demand for political change and resulted to a great extent in the election of the left government of SYRIZA in January 2015. However, a new memorandum by the government of SYRIZA brings more austerity measures for Greeks. Dora’s presentation will attempt to place and respond to some difficult questions for the 21st century by analyzing the political situation in Greece, reflecting on SYRIZA’s experience and the one of the movements. Dimitra-Dora Teloni is a Lecturer (Scientific Associate) in Technological Educational Institute (TEI) of Athens, Social Work Department. She is also member of Greek Social Work Action Network (SWAN) with projects in poor neighborhoods in Patras; she volunteers in the Social Medical Center of Solidarity in Patras, Greece. Expanded Bio Statement: Dimitra-Dora Teloni is a Lecturer (Scientific Associate) in Technological Educational Institute (TEI) of Athens, Social Work Department. She completed her PhD and MA (in research methodology) in the University of Liverpool, UK while her undergraduate studies have been completed in social work in TEI of Patras, Greece. She teaches social work, community development and social research in undergraduate level from 2006 until today while she also teaches community development on postgraduate level. Her publications and research interests focus on radical and anti-racist social work, poverty and social services as well as social movements and community development. She is qualified and registered social worker and her employment experience as a social worker is on the support of cancer patients and their families. She also has worked as a therapist for drug addicted persons and theif families and participated in projects in the community for the prevention of drug use. From 2015 she is member of the board of the Re-Invest Project by the ‘Alliances of fighting Poverty’, while from 2014 until today collaborates as a researcher with the Observatory of Social and Economic Developments, Institute of Labour Studies, Greek Trades Unions Confederation. She is also member of Greek Social Work Action Network (SWAN) and organizes projects in poor neighborhoods in Patras while she also participates as volunteer in the Social Medical Center of Solidarity in Patras, Greece.
